"From Flappers to Rappers"

Before class on Friday, read the following article entitled "From Flappers to Rappers." This article is about the music featured in the 2013 film version of "The Great Gatsby" and covers the reasons why the film's musical producers made the rhetorical decision to use the type of music they did instead of the expected 1920's jazz music. There is also a song-by-song breakdown of the soundtrack that explains specific song choices and how they connect to the movie.

After reading the article, write a short blog post (about 500 words) in your own words on why “The Great Gatsby” used a blend of contemporary music AND 1920's jazz instead solely using the expected 1920’s jazz music. How does the mood of the music affect the mood of the movie? How does the movie add a new spin to the music? What does the unexpected music add to the movie? Do you think the music was a successful rhetorical choice? Do you think it fits in with the mood of the move? Why or why not? Provide examples of specific songs to help get your point across.
